Contrary to what many people think, quantity should not come before quality when it comes to items in your closet. In a time when people can buy new shirts for $2, it’s hard not to buy that amazing V-neck in as many different colors as possible. But there are some certain red flags you need to keep an eye out for when you’re sifting through your closet. If you spot some of these signs, chances are good that it’s time to clean out the closet.
Your shoes outnumber your Facebook friends
This might sound like an exaggeration, but you would be surprised at the number of shoes some people have. Some San Antonio residents are no stranger to fashionable shoes. You probably bought most of them at cheap prices while they were in style. If they are not in style any longer, it’s probably time to get rid of them. If they are too beat up to realistically wear outside your house, they are just wasting valuable closet space. If you bought them for one specific event two years ago and haven’t worn them since, you don’t need them anymore. It’s time to decide which to keep and which to throw.
All your clothes just don’t fit
If you’re to the point where you physically can’t fit all of your clothes and shoes into your closet, you are probably at a crossroads. Either you get a new closet or you clear out some of your clothes. The latter is probably your most cost-effective option. And don’t just make a bit of room so your clothes will fit for now – seriously sort through your clothes to make a significant difference.
Your clothes are all squished together, making them wrinkled
While there are certain ways of avoiding the whole clearing-out-the-closet thing with this one (try extra slim clothes hangers), you should probably be realistic. Do you really need eight black cocktail dresses? Can you maybe survive without that peasant skirt that you haven’t worn since the early 2000s? Doing some serious cleanup with help your clothes stay tidy and wrinkle-free, which will help you save precious ironing time.
Your closet is filled with potentials
You might need that tube top at some point, who knows? There’s a chance you could want to wear those wedges to another party, right? Your brown ballet flats could come in handy one day – even though black shoes fit every one of your outfits better. Remember, you don’t always need to plan for the worst case scenario here. If you plan for a scenario that requires much fewer options of clothing, you are doing the right thing. It’s likely that you never will wear these things again – especially if it’s been more than a year since the last time. Assume this trend will continue and donate these clothes instead.
It takes 15+ minutes to locate something
If your mornings have become frenzied hunts for specific items of clothing, you probably are in a situation that can only be remedied with a decent closet cleanup. Do some serious thinking: is this problem because of your poor closet organizing, or do you simply have too much stuff? More often than not the second option is true. Simplify your life and get rid of some of that clutter!
