Everyone wants to have an organized garage, with everything kept in their designated places. So, we have some tips to help you get the job done right.

7 Tips to an Organized Garage

If you feel your garage is disorganized and needs a makeover, or you’ve just moved in, these tips will help you organize your garage, and give it the love it deserves.

1. Find Time to Plan Your Garage

Having an organized garage depends on your commitment. Always spare some time to declutter your garage.

You can make it a routine to regularly organize your garage over the weekend, or invite your friends to help you out. If you’ve just moved in, allocate time to unpack all your boxes and get things arranged before they get out of hand.

  1. Make Use of Vertical and Ceiling Space

Utilizing vertical and ceiling space will be of great use, especially if you still want to park your car in the garage. Store your items in the ceiling areas and along vertical walls to make use of extra space in small garages.

  1. Empty Your Garage Before Reorganizing

For an organized garage, it’s good to first empty the garage, then rearrange it a little at a time. We often dump items in garages. So, it’s easy to accumulate unnecessary “junk.” The best approach is to remove everything, sort items and rearrange your space from scratch.

  1. Decide What You Really Want to Keep

If you want a nice-looking, organized garage, decide what you intend to keep, and what you really need to just throw away. Remember, decluttering is key to a clean garage.

Determine which items you no longer need that can be given away to others in need. Donate items you don’t need or organize a yard sale to get rid of them. Nowadays, there are disposal companies you can contact to help you decongest your garage.

You can easily figure out which items you truly treasure, by determining how frequently you use them, or the value they hold. This is a perfect way to remove clutter in your garage.

5. Item Grouping Works Well

A lot of people get stressed out looking for items in a garage. Often, you just don’t remember where all your items are located. However, if you group your items and arrange them in allocated spaces, it will be easier to find them when you need them. Plus, your garage will look awesome.

Items you don’t use regularly should be placed further back or up, with regularly used items placed in easier places to access. If you have an item you haven’t used for two years, keep it tucked away and out of the way.

Group “alike” stuff together, for example, hand tools, sports equipment, old toys, etc… Store them in cardboard boxes, which should be well-marked for quick access.

6. Store Sensitive Items Accordingly

Items such as paint and propane are sensitive (and dangerous). Therefore, they should be stored in proper places.

For instance, don’t store propane tanks in garages. Instead, keep them outdoors. Paint should be stored in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. Store Paper Goods Well

Paper items are known to attract pests such as roaches and bugs. They are also extremely flammable materials that could lead to a major fire. Don’t keep these items strewn all over your garage.
