5 Tips to Organizing Your Closet for the Upcoming Year

As you start adding new gear for your winter wardrobe to the mix, you need to get rid of unneeded items in your closet. Out with the old and in with the new? Well, it may not be that simple. But, here are five tips to get your closet ready for the new year before it arrives:

1. Pick & Choose

Go through every section of your closet, from shoes to jewelry, from handbags to clothes. Create these four piles:

  • Keep – Things you wear often or simply love
  • To Be Tweaked – Items that need dry cleaning, alterations or other tweaks to make it to the Keep pile
  • Maybe – These things can go in the attic or garage until you know for sure… or place them in the back of the closet
  • Toss – If you no longer wear it, go ahead and donate it, give it away or throw a yard sale and make some extra bucks for the holidays

2. Prepare Your Closet for the New Season

Get rid of items that you can’t wear this season, such as summer gear. Before you store it away, be sure to check all your pockets. Place the items in garment bags. Organize them by type and color, and categorize your shoes.

3. Find Closet Inspiration

Find images and videos that inspire you. Then, merge some of the closet customizing techniques into your personal world. You’ll find some amazing pictures on Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook.

4. Create Your Wish List

Now that your closet is cleared of clutter and well-organized, you can easily see what you have and what you need. Make yourself a list of what’s missing from your wardrobe. Lists help you shop without going way over budget.

5. Customize Your Closet
